A fish lives in water, and on land it suffocates, struggles and dies. In this artwork, the exaggerated lips cause the fish to be regarded as an outcast as it weighs the fish down and increases its chance of getting caught. This is a symbolic illustration of the tension between preserving one's culture and preventing one from advancing in modern society at the same time. Symbolically, the fish is alive but not living.
